Software Support Should Last Longer Than the Device Looks New

A tablet can still hold a charge, display a clear screen, and run the applications its owner uses every day. Then a banking app stops opening because the operating system is no longer supported. Soon the browser cannot install a security update, and the device becomes risky to use even though nothing visible is broken.

This form of obsolescence is easy to overlook because it does not resemble ordinary failure. There is no cracked case or burned component. The product loses usefulness through a decision about software maintenance. For households that cannot replace devices regularly, the consequences include lost access to school platforms, government services, health portals, and secure communication.

Manufacturers face real limits. Older hardware may not handle every new feature, and maintaining many versions of an operating system requires engineering work. Security threats also change. These challenges do not justify an indefinite promise, but they do support longer and clearer support periods.

Consumers should know before purchase how many years of security updates a device will receive. That information should be displayed as clearly as storage size or camera quality. Support should begin from the date the product is sold, not only from the date it was first released, because devices may remain on store shelves for years.

A useful update policy can separate essential security from optional features. An older phone may not need the newest visual effects, but it still needs protection against known vulnerabilities. Lightweight security updates could extend safe use without pretending every model will perform like the newest one.

Longer support also strengthens repair. Replacing a battery or screen makes little sense if software access will disappear shortly afterward. Repair shops, schools, charities, and refurbishment programs all benefit when a device has a predictable remaining life.

Governments can encourage transparency through labeling rules, procurement standards, and minimum support requirements for certain products. Large institutions can use purchasing power by refusing devices with short update commitments.

The environmental cost of electronics begins long before disposal, through mining, manufacturing, and transport. Keeping a functioning device in use for another year can avoid part of that cost. Software support is therefore not a minor customer-service feature. It is part of the product's actual lifespan.
