Public Libraries Need Quiet Rooms for Online Interviews

For someone without a quiet home, an online job interview can become a test of housing rather than ability. A candidate may sit in a crowded café, whisper from a shared bedroom, or join from a parked car because there is nowhere else to speak privately. Public libraries are well placed to solve part of this problem.

Libraries already provide internet access, computers, study tables, and community services. Yet many study rooms are designed for groups and may be difficult to reserve at the exact time of an interview. Other branches require silence everywhere, which makes a video call inappropriate.

A small number of reservable interview rooms could fill the gap. The space does not need elaborate equipment. A door, reliable internet connection, neutral background, chair, power outlet, and reasonable sound isolation are enough for many users.

Reservation rules should recognize that interviews often run longer than scheduled. A ten-minute buffer between bookings can reduce panic when an employer starts late. Libraries could also allow users to test the connection shortly before the call.

Privacy is essential. Staff should not monitor conversations, and rooms should be positioned so screens are not easily visible from public areas. Headphones can be available for users who need them, with basic cleaning procedures between uses.

The same rooms could support university interviews, telehealth appointments, immigration consultations, legal aid calls, and other conversations that should not happen in an open reading area. Priority policies may be needed during busy periods, but flexibility increases the value of the space.

Libraries have always helped people access information. Today, access also means having a place where a person can participate in important digital interactions with dignity. A quiet interview room is a modest investment that can remove a very real barrier for job seekers, students, and residents who do not have private space of their own.
