Browser Extensions Should Provide Permission Receipts

A student installed a browser extension that promised to organize research tabs. The setup screen asked for permission to read and change data on every website, but the request appeared only once and disappeared after she clicked accept. Months later, she could not remember what the extension was allowed to collect or whether an update had expanded its access.

Extensions can improve accessibility, block distractions, manage passwords, translate pages, and simplify repetitive tasks. They also operate inside the browser, where people enter private messages, financial details, schoolwork, and health information. A small tool may therefore receive a much wider view of someone’s life than its simple purpose suggests.

Permission requests should use specific language. An extension that works only on one learning platform should not ask for access to every site unless that access is necessary. When a permission is optional, users should be able to decline it without losing unrelated features. Stores should make high-risk permissions visually distinct rather than presenting every request in the same routine box.

A permission receipt would give users a lasting record. It could show what the extension may read, whether information leaves the device, when permissions changed, and how to revoke access. After an update, the browser should highlight new capabilities before enabling them. Silent expansion of access should never be treated as an ordinary software change.

Developers also need clear review standards. Extensions that are sold or transferred to new owners can change behavior even when the name and icon remain familiar. Browser stores should disclose ownership changes and suspend tools that begin collecting information unrelated to their stated function.

People cannot make meaningful privacy choices from a message they see once and forget. A receipt turns permission into something that can be reviewed later. The goal is not to make extensions inconvenient. It is to ensure that useful tools remain limited to the access they genuinely need.
