The office lobby had floor-to-ceiling glass facing a landscaped courtyard. To people, the wall created an elegant view. To birds, it often appeared to be open space or a continuation of the trees reflected on its surface. Staff began finding stunned birds near the entrance, especially during migration season.
Window collisions are sometimes treated as random accidents. They are strongly influenced by design. Transparent corners, glass walkways, reflected vegetation, and indoor plants visible through opposite windows can all create false flight paths. At night, bright buildings may attract and disorient migrating birds.
Small stickers placed far apart rarely solve the problem. A bird may still try to fly through the open-looking space between them. Effective markings create a visible pattern across the exterior surface, using dots, lines, films, screens, or textured glass. The spacing must be close enough that birds do not interpret the gaps as safe passage.
Exterior treatment is usually more effective than an interior curtain because it changes the reflection before the bird reaches the glass. New buildings can incorporate patterned or less reflective materials from the start. Existing buildings can add films, cords, screens, or other retrofits.
Landscaping decisions matter. Placing attractive plants immediately beside hazardous glass may draw birds into danger. Designers can change the distance, angle, or visibility of vegetation while still creating welcoming outdoor space.
Lighting policies can reduce risk during migration. Offices can switch off unnecessary lights, use motion controls, and close blinds after work. These measures also save energy. Cities can establish seasonal “lights out” programs for large buildings without requiring streets to become unsafe.
Monitoring helps identify the worst locations. Building staff, students, or volunteers can record collisions, time of day, weather, and species. Injured birds should be handled according to guidance from wildlife professionals, because a bird that flies away may still have serious trauma.
Bird-safe design does not require turning buildings into dark boxes. Glass can remain part of architecture while becoming more visible to wildlife. The important shift is recognizing that transparency is experienced differently by different species. A window that looks beautiful to a person may be invisible to a bird. Good design accounts for both views.
