Prescription Labels Need Larger Print on Request

Medication instructions are only useful if the patient can read them. Yet prescription labels often place essential information on a small bottle using small type, dense abbreviations, and limited spacing. For a person with reduced vision, reading the dosage may require a magnifying glass, a phone camera, or help from someone else.

Pharmacies already manage many kinds of label information, including dosage, patient name, prescriber, warnings, and refill details. Offering a larger-print option would not change the prescription itself. It would change how clearly the instructions are presented.

One approach is to attach an expanded label or provide a separate large-print sheet that repeats the same essential information. The patient should not have to rely on memory after a pharmacist explains the directions verbally.

Consistency is important. If the bottle says one tablet twice daily, the large-print version must use the same wording and timing. Automatic generation from the same prescription record can reduce transcription errors.

Privacy should remain intact. A large-print document is physically easier for others to see, so patients may prefer a folded insert or larger label that can remain on the container. The pharmacy can offer choices rather than assuming one format suits everyone.

The request process should also be simple. A patient should be able to add an accessibility preference to the pharmacy profile so it applies to future refills. Repeatedly explaining poor vision at every visit creates an unnecessary barrier.

Other formats may help too, including high-contrast printing, electronic instructions compatible with screen readers, or tactile markers that help identify containers. These options should complement, not replace, clear counseling.

Medication safety depends on accurate information reaching the person who will use the medicine. Larger print is a straightforward accommodation that can reduce confusion and support independence. A label should not become harder to understand simply because the bottle is small.
